Swedish (Hägg)
Swedish (Hägg) : ornamental name from hägg ‘bird cherry’ (Prunus padus). This is one of the surnames drawn from the vocabulary of nature and adopted more or less arbitrarily in the 19th century.English : from Old Norse Hagi, which has been identified as a byname from hagr ‘deft’, ‘dextrous’, although it could equally well be a habitational name meaning ‘the enclosure’, see Hagen.South German : variant of Haack.

German
German : from Middle High German anker ‘anchor’, applied either as an occupational name for a smith who made ships’ anchors or as a habitational name from a house identified by an anchor.English : from the Old French personal name Anchier (see Angier).Norwegian and Swedish : probably originally a Swedish soldier’s name meaning ‘anchor’. This is the name of a powerful and influential Norwegian family, who came to Christiana (Oslo) from Sweden in 1668.Danish : from a personal name, of which the first element means ‘eagle’ and the second (probably) ‘violent’.Americanized form of northern French Anquier, from a personal name of Germanic origin (see Angier).

Irish and Scottish
Irish and Scottish : reduced form of McGee, Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Aodha ‘son of Aodh’ (see McCoy).English : this is a common name in northern England, of uncertain origin. It may in fact be the Irish or Scottish name in an English context.French (Gée) : habitational name from any of several places called Gé or Gée, for example in Maine-et-Loire, derived from the Gallo-Roman domain name Gaiacum.

English
English : unexplained. In PA in the 18th century this surname alternated with Diddle, likewise unexplained. He and a relative, Thomas Aduddell, both bought land from descendants of William Penn.

English : unexplained. Its form is that of an English habitational name but no place of this name has been identified in Britain. It may be an altered form of English Puddiford, itself probably a variant of Puddefoot or Puddephat, a nickname for a short, fat person or someone with a pot belly, from Middle English puddy ‘round’, ‘rotund’, + vat ‘barrel’.Jonathan Paddleford is recorded in Cambridge, MA, in 1652.

English
English : from the Middle English vernacular form, Maudeleyn, of the New Testament Greek personal name Magdalēnē. This is a byname, meaning ‘woman from Magdala’ (a village on the Sea of Galilee, deriving its name from Hebrew migdal ‘tower’), denoting the woman cured of evil spirits by Jesus (Luke 8:2), who later became a faithful follower. In Christian folk belief she was generally identified with the repentant sinner who washed Christ’s feet with her tears in Luke 7; hence the name came to be used as a byname for a prostitute, also a tearful woman. The popularity of the personal name increased with the supposed discovery of her relics in the 13th century.
