English, German, Dutch, French (Noé, Noë), Spanish (Noé), Catalan (Noè)
English, German, Dutch, French (Noé, Noë), Spanish (Noé), Catalan (Noè) : from the Biblical personal name Noach ‘Noah’, which means ‘comfort’ in Hebrew. According to the Book of Genesis, Noah, having been forewarned by God, built an ark into which he took his family and representatives of every species of animal, and so was saved from the flood that God sent to destroy the world because of human wickedness. The personal name was not common among non-Jews in the Middle Ages, but the Biblical story was an extremely popular subject for miracle plays. In many cases, therefore, the surname probably derives from a nickname referring to someone who had played the part of Noah in a miracle play or pageant, rather than from a personal name.

n.
Resentment; ill will; anger; displeasure.
a.
Desiring or professing to be; vainly pretending to be; as, a would-be poet.
v. t.
To close or fill with a wall, as a doorway.
adv.
As an auxiliary, will is used to denote futurity dependent on the verb. Thus, in first person, "I will" denotes willingness, consent, promise; and when "will" is emphasized, it denotes determination or fixed purpose; as, I will go if you wish; I will go at all hazards. In the second and third persons, the idea of distinct volition, wish, or purpose is evanescent, and simple certainty is appropriately expressed; as, "You will go," or "He will go," describes a future event as a fact only. To emphasize will denotes (according to the tone or context) certain futurity or fixed determination.
v. i.
To be willing; to be inclined or disposed; to be pleased; to wish; to desire.
v. t.
To inclose with a wall, or as with a wall.
v. t. & i.
See 2d Will.
n.
Ill will; malice.
v. t. & i.
See 2d Will.
n.
Clothes; furniture; appurtenances; luggage; as, to pack or store one's things.
n.
Malice; ill will; spite.
v. i.
To exist in a certain manner or relation, -- whether as a reality or as a product of thought; to exist as the subject of a certain predicate, that is, as having a certain attribute, or as belonging to a certain sort, or as identical with what is specified, -- a word or words for the predicate being annexed; as, to be happy; to be here; to be large, or strong; to be an animal; to be a hero; to be a nonentity; three and two are five; annihilation is the cessation of existence; that is the man.
n.
No thanks; ill will; misfortune.
v. t.
Not to will; to refuse; to reject.
v. t.
To form an opinion by reasoning; to judge; to conclude; to believe; as, I think it will rain to-morrow.
