English (Kent) : from Middle English apse ‘aspen tree’ (Old English æpse). See also Asp. Generally, this was a topographic name for someone who lived by an aspen or a habitational name from a place named with this word, as for example Apps in Surrey, Apse on the Isle of Wight, or Asps in Warwickshire.
