The majority, with examples in at least fourteen counties, are named from Old English horh ‘mud’, ‘slime’ or horn ‘dirt’ + tūn ‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’. One in southern Gloucestershire, however, is named from Old English heorot ‘hart’ + dūn ‘hill’.
