When someone detected the smell of a fart, they would loudly declare "Slugs" whereupon the (perceived) perpetrator would receive Slugs - punches to the arms, body, and legs. Slugs would continue until the victim named three local pubs, and whistled. The whistle was usually quite difficult to achieve amidst the general melee and pain. The farter could prevent Slugs by saying "No Slugs" three times, before Slugs were declared. This was a common punishment meted out in the late 70s to mid 80s. I don't know if it still common practice.
