Rust is British slang for bronze coinage.
Meat Pie
Moody, sulky, stroppy or in a tantrum. Used as in "Having a mard", "He's mardy", "He's a mard", "Mardy bastard.". (Mardy is mostly interchangeable with mard). If you piss someone off and they are upset you say "Mmm.... mmmmm... mmmmmm..... MMMMaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrdddd" in a high pitch voice causing them to go red in the face and boil with rage hence they are Mardy. Another contribution described it as follows: "Mostly by my cousin & her extended family around Coventry. Means moody, miserable, particularly when tired, and almost exclusively to describe females. eg "Ooooh, you're a bit mardy today" or when adults "Mardy Bitch" to describe miserable females in nightclubs.".
BETWEEN THE JIGS AND THE REELS
Between the jigs and the reels is Irish slang for between one thing and another.
n bum; homeless person. Brits don’t use the term “bum” in this context.
Potato crisps, or chips (as opposed to French Fries). As in "All we 'ad were a pint and a bag o' scabs". Actually first heard in Torremolinos, Spain on a coach excursion, uttered by a lad from Bradford to some mates. Also often overheard in Leeds in later years. Interestingly (?) - observed on the above mentioned Spanish coach trip - a cinema showing 'Adios Senor Chips'. (ed: I vaguely remember a dreadful song from the 1960's - 70's of which only the refrain 'Torremolinos, Torremolinos' has stuck in my head. If anyone has the slightest idea what this song is or can provide lyrics etc I'd be very grateful! I wonder if it was a Monty Python song?)
(1) unco-ordinated and clumsy (2) left-handed.
